As her mother deals with her own grief by falling into an intense depression, Gifty becomes obsessed with finding some sort of scientific basis for the suffering in her life. In the follow-up to her remarkable debut, Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi smartly contrasts the academic world’s objective, clinical writing with the expressive, almost poetic prose of Gifty’s personal experiences.
