Publisher Description
Sometimes danger comes from the most unexpected places.
Gwen Proctor has always been willing to do anything it takes to protect her kids. But there are some things even she can’t protect them from. When a violent incident at Connor’s school brings the press to Gwen’s doorstep, she agrees to take a case out of town hoping to keep her family out of the crushing media spotlight.
The case is that of a missing girl, last seen getting into a truck with a stranger before disappearing. Gwen has a reputation for finding those who are lost, but this time something is wrong. Her instincts are off, and every clue she uncovers only raises more doubts, not just about the missing girl and the circumstances of her disappearance, but also about the fragile safety Gwen’s created for her family.
The closer she comes to uncovering the truth, the more she unwittingly puts those she loves at risk. Someone from Gwen’s past doesn’t appreciate the new life she’s built for herself and is willing to do anything it takes to tear it apart. Except this time it isn’t Gwen in the crosshairs, but her partner Sam. Without her instincts to rely on, how can Gwen protect those she loves against an enemy she never sees coming?

Carrie Ryan did Rachel Caine justice!
Between 4.5 - 4.75 stars! I must say, while I was hesitant to see how this would pan out (with another author stepping into Rachel Caine’s shoes), I must say, Carrie Ryan did an excellent job with her turn at carrying the torch of the Stillhouse Lake Series that so many readers have fallen in love with!
To be honest, I didn’t even know that authors stepping in to get a series completely was really a thing until the plot line of Verity, I guess I’ve never read a series like that which was expanded, but I learned then that it does happen in these unfortunate circumstances. However, sometimes new beginnings are often due to a painful goodbye. Rachel Caine will be missed, and I hope that she is Resting in Peace. I know that she’s proud of Carrie Ryan’s writing.
For those that were worried that too much prose and such would be switched up perhaps between authors, there was only a slight shift in being able to tell between the two authors (maybe - I very well could even be mistaken!)
My only complaint is that two different times that I noticed, one character would say a phrase or come to a conclusion that another character would have the same end to the train of thought or whatever. That’s only a mild hiccup and not even a big deal, lol…
Also - I wasn’t sure, but I do believe (& hope!! That she’ll be able to finish the series!!)
