Publisher Description
A number-one best seller in several categories with over 14,000 five-star ratings on Goodreads.
From the number-one New York Times best-selling and award-winning author Colleen Hoover comes "A stand-alone romantic thriller that is tragic, creepy, and brilliant!" (Mel Reader Reviews)
Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.
Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of the night their family was forever altered.
Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.
Sexy. Twisted. Consuming.
Due to graphic scenes and mature content, this book is recommended for listeners 18+.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Known for her intensely emotional romances, Colleen Hoover comes out swinging with her first psychological thriller. Struggling novelist Lowen Ashleigh is about to give up on writing altogether when she’s offered an opportunity to ghostwrite a book for best-selling mystery author Verity Crawford, who’s been injured in a car crash. But from the moment Lowen moves into the Crawford house to collect Verity’s notes, things seem off…and Verity’s husband is particularly suspicious. Hoover fills Lowen’s journey with tension and dread, especially when she discovers a disturbing autobiography that Verity never intended for anyone to read. Two narrators propel the highly taut mystery, drawing you into their characters’ worlds with urgency and convincing realness. You may want to steady yourself as Lowen inches perilously closer to the truth about her assignment—and remind yourself to breathe.

See AllUpdated Review: Narrators or Siri?
I’m updating my review from a 2 to 4. I can’t stop thinking about this book days after I’ve finished and you know what? I think that’s a good sign of the story. It made me feel absolutely disgusting, I was disturbed, I hated the characters, I felt uneasy. There are triggers, but because the book made feel something even days after - I have to come back and change my rating.
Everything else still stands when it comes to the narrators they used and the editing. Horrible. (see below)
Old review:
Im new to the audiobook genre of reading, but I’ve listened to about 10 and a few of them being Colleen’s work.
I should have read all the reviews before I purchased this one. Absolute torture if you have any sort of auditory sensory issues.
The voice for the main character is fine, but the voice for Verity felt so awkward I looked up if they had used AI.
The thing is, I’ve heard that narrators voice before and I think the sound editing and engineers really messed it up. It’s not her fault.
However, major TW. I’m a new mother so hearing about child abuse made me skip forward a few times because I couldn’t handle it. If that’s what the author is going for - bravo I guess but 0/10 do not recommend. Aside from the actual plot being short sided (triggers not judged) the character development was weak and not believable.
Great
