Chapter 14 of Ivywhisker’s Truth

When her sight cleared from blackness to colorful smudges to sharp focus after three moons, and her belly began to swell almost imperceptibly, Birch was ready to leave the medicine den. He had promised that he wouldn’t leave without her, but as Mooncloud chewed up soothing herbs for her eyes everyday and they grew clearer, she was soon ready to leave the medicine den. He pulled himself to his paws and limped out the entrance, dragging his limp back left leg behind him. Birch would never use it again, so he could never fight, run, or hunt, but he helped Mooncloud and Wisesight with their herbs. Ivywhisker, reveling in the feel of sunlight on her fur that she could see, couldn’t help but feel sadness and something else- almost a dread anticipation. She dreamed about her Dark Life now and it had changed. Before it was pure black with white eyes, but now it was a beautiful, more beautiful than she herself would ever be, black she-cat with tiny silver speckles that shimmered like stars. She had piercing, enticing sapphire blue eyes. Ivywhisker was afraid of the darkness growing inside her like the kits in her stomach: it even had a voice now. Deep, glamorous, smooth. And her name was Shadowy Betrayal.
•Do not trust the shadows.•
A small snippet of a story from her kit moons drifted back to her. Her kit moons, careless and carefree. No worrying about what would happen if she carried illegitimate, half-Clan kits, from a rogue father and a Clan mother, in her belly. Ivywhisker shook away the memories that kept drifting back. Moonwater wanted her to go to the Gathering. Her disappearance had been kept secret, and any other Clan cats asking received the same answer, “she’s in the nursery with her kits”. She had been, but in a… •different• nursery. Now, Moonwater needed to get her in sight of all the Clans to ensure that there was no scandal about her running away with a rogue. Birch wouldn’t be coming, as he couldn’t keep up with the rest of the Clan.
Lightningstar gathered them closer with a wave of his black and white tail, and they set off, bounding through the forest and then the grasslands. Ivywhisker stayed at the tail end, chatting with Wisesight, who was going instead of Mooncloud since she needed to look after Birch, and Thunderleaf, whose belly was swollen with Fireleap’s kits and wanted to go to the last Gathering that she could before they were born. There was an island in the widest part of the river, in the middle, and this is where the Gathering was held. The Tree of the Clans stood in the middle of the island, majestic and resplendent against the evening sky. The full moon was shining against a backdrop of stars. As they approached the island, she could see the group from StardustClan off to the side, some Tree Cats, Shade Cats, and Cavern Cats there as well, and one cat whom she didn’t recognize. His pelt was black with ginger splotches, and his eyes were piercing amber.
Lightningstar bounded up to the tall tree and scaled it easily, partly because of the magic and partly because he’d been doing this almost his whole life. He stood beside Maplestar, Heatherstar, and Swiftstar proudly. The black-and-ginger tom also dug his claws into the bark, but stopped at a branch below the leaders’. With surprise, she saw that Mysticstar was there, along with a gray and white she-cat and a black tom with one white paw.
As they were preparing to start, something rustled through the bushes. Ivywhisker curled protectively over her belly and shut her eyes as the Clan cats around her unsheathed their claws and clustered around her and Thunderleaf. But when a flash of cream fur showed in the bushes, everyone stopped. No predator was colored like that. It was another cat… or cats, as a small silver tabby kit emerged from the undergrowth. Then out came a bigger, cream-colored tabby she-cat, her belly rounded with kits due any day.
“Please,” she rasped. “Take me in. I have to… I have a kit, and two about to be born. I need safety. I beg of you.” And with that, she lowered herself carefully to the ground flattened her ears and lowered her tail, the ultimate signs of submission and respect.
Before any of the other leaders could say anything, Heatherstar raised her tail straight up to take the floor.
“RiverClan welcomes you.”
Those three simple words probably changed the she-cat’s life, but Ivywhisker was taken away from it by something else. Thunderleaf had started making a vague noise of pain on the ground.
“She’s kitting,” said Wisesight, rushing over. “No camp is close enough for us to get her there. Songpaw, get chervil. Other apprentices, follow Songpaw and get cobwebs.”
Leafthroat handed him a sturdy stick from the Tree of the Clans, which had fallen by her paws. The Tree of the Clans knew what it was doing and exactly when to shed a few sticks to help cats. The apprentices raced across the tree bridge and disappeared into the grasslands. Wisesight was preparing for a disaster, she realized. Cobwebs and chervil were good to have on hand if things went wrong.
“I can help. I kitted in the forest and helped Mooncloud kit.” Ivywhisker didn’t know why the words were coming out of her mouth, but she stepped forward anyway, placing her paws gently on Thunderleaf’s belly.
~
Luckily, after the kitting, all three of Thunderleaf’s kits had survived and were healthy. There was a orange tom-kit, a silver tom-kit, and a silver spotted she-cat, named respectively Treekit, Riverkit, and Spottedkit.
“Dawn is swiftly coming, but we have one thing to say,” Heatherstar meowed.
“The Tribe of Rocky Mountains has declared war on MysticClan.”

Lotusfall’s Performance chapter sixteen part 1

Review: as someone with a mental disorder (high-functioning autism, mainly) I did appreciate seeing a cat with ADHD

Now for the chapter!

Lotusfall followed Patchshade’s scent through RiverClan territory, panic coursing through her body. What if she didn’t make it in time? What if it was too late? She wanted to believe that Patchshade wouldn’t kill Willowstar, but she knew better than to hope for the tom to turn away from his plan.
He’s a true Dark Forest cat, she thought painfully. He belonged there.
A sharp scent suddenly bathed her tongue and her ears pricked up at the smell. Blood! She followed it, nearly tripping on a tussock of grass, and gasped in horror.
Patchshade was standing over Willowstar’s body, his paws and muzzle stained red. The leader convulsed and grew still, bleeding from a wound in his belly. He was losing a life.
“Patchshade, no!”
The tom whipped around, his eyes wide with surprise. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be confined!”
Lotusfall slunk forward, keeping one eye on Patchshade and the other on her leader, who hadn’t moved yet.
“Shut up and fight me,” she spat. She hoped to lure him away from Willowstar so he could recover from his lost life, but she hadn’t expected Patchshade to spring on her so quickly.
With a loud screech, the fight began.

The second part is in Squirrelflight’s Super Edition audiobook!
