As she readily admits in the early chapters of her startlingly honest memoir, Jessica Simpson boosted her fame by making herself the sexy butt of the joke. But even though she deliberately cultivated her image as the early 2000s’ hottest “dumb blonde,” the pop singer’s book—which was written without a ghostwriter—proves that she’s anything but stupid. Simpson drew on decades of her own journals to give an unfiltered account of a childhood spent trying to please adults, both at home and in the entertainment industry, and an adulthood defined by codependent relationships, addiction, and depression. At turns heartbreaking and hilarious, Open Book paints a compelling portrait of the celebrity’s complicated inner life (which she kept secret for a long, long time) and of how she got through the darkest times with the help of her family, friends, and faith.

Singer and reality TV star Simpson holds nothing back in this earnest and entertaining memoir. She tells of growing up in 1980s Texas where she was sexually abused by the daughter of a family friend, and of unsuccessfully auditioning for the Mickey Mouse Club at age 13 with Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling before going on to sign a record deal with Columbia and marrying 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey. Along the way, she details the struggles in her life, such as the pressure to support her family as a teenager, divorcing Lachey, enduring what she describes as an emotionally abusive relationship with musician John Mayer, being body-shamed in an overly appearance-centered industry, and going through bouts of heavy drinking. But Simpson ends on a positive note, discussing her billion-dollar apparel line and marriage with professional football star Eric Johnson, with whom she has three children. Her positive attitude is infectious and will have readers rooting for her as if she were a good friend. Simpson's candid and thoroughly engaging story will appeal to her fans and beyond. Interesting
Grew up in the time when all the pop stars in her generation were at their height of their careers, or so I thought. Reading her story made me realize that what they’ve been through were not all sunshines and happiness. The dark side of their life was almost a revelation to me.
Anyway, I like the book. It’s interesting and worth reading if you were growing up during their era.
Loved her book!
I really enjoyed reading Jessica’s story. From everything she’s been through and all the loves in her life it was so nice to see where she ended up. I actually got emotional reading her last chapter. Proud of her and wish her the best in life and sobriety.
