A great Russian physician, playwright and author Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) is considered as a master of brief genre. Often ambiguous, at times humorous, ironic, anecdotal, facetious, lyrical, apathetic, bizarre, passionate and tragic, Chekhov's plays and short stories explore the entire range of the human spirit. “A Chameleon” is one of such stories.

Published in 1883, the story depicts a comic situation has happened with an officer on one summer day. He cannot come to a decision what to do to the owner of a dog who has bitten a shop-keeper, because the dog could be a General's pet. Simple, straightforward story with another typical comedic ending from Chekhov.
