A Pair of Blue Eyes
Publisher Description
The book describes the love triangle of a young woman, Elfride Swancourt, and her two suitors from very different backgrounds. Stephen Smith is a socially inferior but ambitious young man who adores her and with whom she shares a country background. Henry Knight is the respectable, established, older man who represents London society. Elfride finds herself caught in a battle between her heart, her mind and the expectations of those around her – her parents and society.

Solid read, 4.3 out of 5
Really great read. An underrated classic, although the end is a bit surprising and somewhat discombobulating.
Great!
As an avid admirer of Hardy, I was pleased with reading this early writing. The first 1000 pages were rather arduous to read, and read like a hack Romance. But suddenly then it seemed that Hardy finally found his true writing voice! The last section is worthy of his later, more celebrated works!
A Pair of Blue Eyes
Another masterpiece by Thomas Hardy. He writes so beautifully of this tragic love story. No modern literature can compare to the works of this great novelist. His strengths lie in his storytelling and his insights into human nature. Enjoy the masterpiece.
