a Rocky ride
Callum is book three in the Regency Rock Star series by Sasha Cottman. This was an emotionally challenging book to read. Cottman explores the difficult issues of drug use and alcoholism. Callum was my least favorite book in this series and my least favorite noble lord. A raging alcoholic and drug user, Callum is slowly destroying himself and the world around him. Eliza Follett is the woman who has been in love with him for years. Despite his bad behavior, Eliza stays by him. On the surface that seems noble. But Eliza’s character just felt desperate to me. I wasn’t a fan of their relationship. I am hoping that the next book in the series will be more to my taste. I was given a copy of this book.
Nightmares
Sir Callum Sharp has turned to alcohol and drugs to attempt to dull the memory and nightmares of Waterloo. He and Eliza have been in love for years, but she doesn’t know how to help him, and it appears he doesn’t want him to. The other Noble Lords have reached their limit with his destructive and unpredictable behavior. Discovering that his father is dying devastates Callum, but may provide the impetus to turn his life around. He needs to prove to his father that he will be able to care for the estate and his family. He needs Eliza in his life. To do this, he needs to be sober. Will he accept his father’s counsel and find the courage to change his life?
Callum’s story is intensely emotional. It deals with PTSD and addiction, not unusual partners even today. Callum shows reluctance to turn to his friends even though they were at Waterloo with him. His friends, The Noble Lords, are frustrated because they don’t know how to reach him. Baron Sharp and Eliza may not completely understand Callum’s misery, but they refuse to give up on him. He takes a giant step forward when he meets a new friend with a squeaky violin and some shrewd advice. This is a good story. It is not a fairytale, but there is hope and an HEA.
