INTRODUCTION Historically, successful careers in organizations followed a well defined and predictable pattern. Typically an individual begins working in a chosen area with intentions of gradually acquiring more responsibility and authority through upward and lateral promotions. In contemporary organizations however, a single well defined and predictable pattern is almost nonexistent. It is becoming more common place for an individual to encounter several moves within a particular organization. It is just as likely that an individual will work for more than one organization in his or her career span. The shift in career mobility is due in part to the current business environment. This activity suggests that the business environment may influence an individual's career goals.
