Application of the WHO ICF to Management of Acquired Apraxia of Speech (World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health ) (Report‪)‬

To date, there have been no published, formalized attempts to assist in structuring treatment or outcome measures for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) using the framework of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) (WHO, 2001). This report was designed to provide a summary of the types of outcome measures and treatment targets described in the extant AOS literature using the context of the ICF. Seventy-four AOS treatment investigations were reviewed. Outcome measures were coded according to ICF levels and summary tables prepared for each level. Findings revealed that the preponderance of measures reported in the AOS treatment literature corresponded to the ICF's level of Body Function. Only a few measures and treatments addressed concepts concerning Activity/Participation and Contextual Factors. Keywords: apraxia of speech; WHO ICF; speech therapy
