Straddling the mighty river Brahmaputra, the tea growing region of the state borders Bangladesh on the south and Myanmar on the south-east. Experiencing high precipitation during the monsoon season, which goes up to 250 mm to 300 mm per day and with temperatures rising to highs of almost 38˚C, Assam is blessed with climatic conditions that is extremely conducive to successful tea plantation. This hot and humid tropical climate contributes to the unique malty Assam Tea, for which the state is world famous. The Tea industry of Assam is about 200 hundred years old. It occupies an important place and plays a very pivotal role in the economy of the state as well as contributing to the overall exchequer of the country. It is from Assam that tea cultivation spread to other parts of the Indian sub-continent.
