Before The Long Flight

When Meara and her daughter, Liera, arrive in the quiet village of Aubeville, they carry little more than the hope of surviving another season. Years of wandering in search of Lira's missing father have left them weary, and the kindness of the Kestler family offers something they have almost forgotten, a place to rest.

As the days pass, strangers become neighbors, and neighbors slowly become family. Liera discovers comfort in ordinary moments she has never known: shared meals, honest work, village festivals, and the quiet companionship of Calen Kestler, a reserved young carpenter whose patience asks for nothing in return. While trust grows slowly between them, old wounds refuse to disappear, and the unanswered questions of the past continue to shadow every step toward the future.

Yet peace is fragile. As Meara's strength begins to fade, Liera must face the possibility that some journeys cannot be completed by those who begin them. In the warmth of a home she never expected to find, she learns that love is not measured by grand promises but by the people who choose to remain beside one another through grief, uncertainty, and hope.

Before the Long Flight is a character-driven fantasy novel about found family, quiet resilience, and the courage to embrace belonging after years of loss. It is the first book in the Where the Swallow Return dilogy.
