With an area of 16,807 square kilometres and a population of more than 13.8 million, Beijing governs 16 districts (namely, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen, Xuanwu, Chao-yang, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Haidian, Mentougou, Fangshan, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Daxing, Changping, Huairou and Pinggu) and 2 rural counties (Miyun and Yan-qing). It is one of the four municipalities under direct jurisdiction of the Central Government.
