The second book in the Betrayal series. The continuing story of two young children, Rose and Alfie, who enter the lives of foster carer Grace Hunter and her husband Andy. Grace and Andy are placed under huge pressure by this placement, the most complex they have ever dealt with. Balancing the needs of two severely abused and neglected children, as well as those of their own daughter, becomes ever more difficult. The placement starts to have a damaging effect on Grace's marriage and her own mental health. A change of social worker, a disastrous holiday and the chaotic aftermath of contact with Rose and Alfie's birth family all add to the toxic situation which threatens to pull Grace and Andy apart.
