Brittle Lone Myrtle

In a quiet mountain valley, a young girl knows only the simple rhythms of family, work, and the certainty that tomorrow will look much like today. Then, in a single morning, everything she loves is taken from her.

Forced into a life of captivity, Mara learns that survival is measured not in years but in days. She endures by becoming smaller, quieter, and almost invisible, until the person she once was seems little more than a distant memory.

When an unexpected chance at freedom finally arrives, the wilderness offers no promise of safety. Exhausted and alone, she is rescued by a solitary mountain trapper whose kindness asks for nothing in return. In the silence of an isolated cabin, where trust must be built through ordinary acts rather than grand gestures, Mara begins the difficult work of believing that a different life might still be possible.

But healing is not a destination reached in a single season. Every memory carries the weight of what was lost, and every step toward hope demands the courage to leave behind the certainty of fear.

Brittle Lone Myrtle is the first novel in The Pale Myrtle dilogy, a quiet, character-driven work of historical fiction about grief, resilience, and the fragile ways people find one another after everything they once called home has vanished.
