Publisher Description

A standalone edition of Annie Proulx’s beloved story “Brokeback Mountain” (in the collection Close Range)—the basis for the major motion picture directed by Ang Lee, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, “Brokeback Mountain” is her masterpiece.

Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they’re working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.

Both men work hard, marry and have kids. Yet over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important bond in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.

The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of “Brokeback Mountain,” and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world’s intolerance.

Powerful and Moving

The story is a simple one but powerful nonetheless. Moving in its melancholy about a love that could not be pursued yet endured over years. Glad to have read this.

Lived up to expectations

While I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative, I encountered a creative choice that posed a challenge. The inclusion of dialogue to convey a western accent necessitated rereading to fully comprehend the text. Additionally, certain sentences required commas or other punctuation marks to indicate shifts or pauses in thought. Despite these minor issues, I wholeheartedly appreciated this book. It continues to resonate with me emotionally. <3

Surprisingly Good

I had to read it for my English class. I didn’t expect much other than the movies is pretty freaky. I liked the fact that it’s only 50 pages, I think it took me a shorter time to finish the book rather than the movie. And of course I loved the book better.
