An exciting YA-crossover Jane Eyre sci-fi retelling about a world split in two...
In the distant future, a genetic plague has separated humanity in two – Subterraneans who live in underground burrows to protect their health, and strong surface-dwelling Omniterraneans.
Zuzan Cayan, a brilliant Subter girl with “light blindness,” is about to leave the safety of her burrow and earn a living. With her low life expectancy, however, her options are slim. That is until she’s offered the chance of a lifetime to study the population’s broken genetic code, fix the divide and reunite the world once again.
But when a new virus turns fatal for the Omnits, Zuzan must find a cure or humanity won’t simply remain separate, it will become extinct.
With enemies on all sides, Zuzan must hold on to the light at the end of the tunnel – or risk the world falling into darkness.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Kaley's debut, a cleverly crafted exploration of the morality surrounding a genetic virus, captivates with inventive science and adventure. In the far future, a genetic plague has separated humanity into the physically weak but intellectually gifted Subterraneans, who live underground to protect themselves from disease, and the hardy but feeble-minded Omniterraneans, who toil above ground to grow food and provide supplies for the Subters. Zuzan Cayan is a sickly 19-year-old albino Subter with an intelligence score off the charts. Because her life expectancy is only four-and-a-half more years, her job prospects are limited—until geneticist Maven Ringol sees her potential and recruits her for an important mission: curing the disease that keeps the Subters underground so that society can be reunited in future generations. They must hurry as the Omnits respond to false reports that the Subters are trying to kill them with increasing threats and bombings. Meanwhile, betrayal brews within some Subter factions. Despite a few side plots that distract from the urgency of the mission, the well-developed characters, thorny moral questions, and intricate science will keep readers attentive. Those who like meticulous detail and compassionate characters in their science fiction will enjoy this riveting thriller.
Customer Reviews
Def recommend to action and dystopian lovers!
I haven’t read much in years, after I used to thoroughly enjoy young adult dystopian books such as the hunger games and divergent. I decided to relight my love of reading and after sampling a few books, I picked this one. while the intro may seem a little long, it sets up an extremely detailed and interesting plot, different from any other books I’ve read and unique. As the book went on and the plot picked up, I found myself very excited to read this book, and look forward to the end of the day. I love how the plot always had quick action and besides the intro (which was interesting, however took a moment for me to get into the plot) was never boring and always kept me on my toes. The concept of the society that this takes place in is very different and creative, backed up with interesting writing that brings life to the science that backs up the illnesses and theories in the book. The only thing I didn’t particularly like about the book is that it was so interesting and had so much action, that I wish that it was longer and went into more detail. I recommend to anyone who loves action and dystopian novels, as well as a taste for romance and heart. I can see this becoming a multi-book series with a lot of followers, including myself. I will be anxiously awaiting another book, as I want this plot to continue and see what happens with these characters.
