Publisher Description

One of America's leading anthropolgists offers solutions to the perplexing question of why people behave the way they do.

Why do Hindus worship cows? Why do Jews and Moslems refuse to eat pork? Why did so many people in post-medieval Europe believe in witches?

Marvin Harris answers these and other perplexing questions about human behavior, showing that no matter how bizarre a people's behavior may seem, it always stems from identifiable and intelligble sources.

cow, pigs, wars, and witches

Marvin Harris is one of the most brilliant anthropologists ever. You read this book, you may be inspired to read his entire catalogue.

Dull read

This has an interesting concept but it is just not interesting to actually read because of the way the book dwells for too long on certain topics that are straying far beyond the points being made. I almost feel like the author is just adding padding by describing the ins and outs of each society discussed even if it just barely related to the food they eat and do not eat.
