Had ICS been telemarketing products instead of debt collection, Reed knew he would never have made salesperson of the month. He would have quit the first payday and lied to his mother that he had been fired for being too honest with the customers. Though educated first by management in consumer protection laws, his supervisor had privately encouraged him to ignore those guidelines if they proved, after three attempts, to be unproductive. He was certain his supervisor's advice had prevented the stomach ulcers some other collection associates suffered and had earned him employee of the month twice since the start of the year, making a career total of six.
