New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin’s Desperate Girls is a tightly wound, fast-paced romantic thriller that follows a desperate woman on the run as she hides from a killer’s symbolic revenge spree.
Defense attorney Brynn Holloran is right at home among cops, criminals, and tough-as-nails prosecutors. With her sharp wit and pointed words, she has a tendency to intimidate, and she likes it that way. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom, but in her personal life, she’s a mess.
When a vicious murderer she once helped prosecute resurfaces and starts a killing spree to wipe out those who put him behind bars, one thing becomes clear: Brynn needs to run for her life.
When the police come up empty-handed, Brynn turns to a private security firm for protection. But when she defies advice and gets involved in the investigation, even the former Secret Service agent assigned to protect her may not be able to keep her safe. With every new clue she discovers, Brynn is pulled back into the vortex of a disturbing case from her past.
As the clock ticks down on a manhunt, Brynn’s desperate search for the truth unearths long-buried secrets and reignites a killer’s fury.
Griffin (Touch of Red) weaves just enough romance into this intensely suspenseful novel of murder and passion. Defense attorney Brynn, about to begin a trial to save her client's life, hears that her former colleague has been murdered. The main suspect is a man she helped put in jail, who's now free and looking for revenge. Brynn's boss promptly hires private security to protect Brynn and her cocounsel. At first Brynn is furious about her activities being dictated, but the more she gets to know her guard, Erik, the less she minds. Erik, former military and Secret Service, does everything by the book: no distractions, not even caffeine on the job. But the more time he spends with Brynn, the harder it is to follow the rules. As they embark on the dual thrill rides of the trial and the search for the killer, fire builds between Brynn and Erik. Griffin pulls out all the stops in a phenomenal twist ending that will leave readers stunned.

Crime story...detective story...client/bodyguard relationship
In Desperate Girls we are introduced to Brynn Holloway, a defense attorney, working a high profile murder case while also helping detectives solve the murder of her former friend. Brynn and long time friend Jen Ballard worked close together as prosecutors on a case years ago that sent James Corby away for life with no parole in a maximum security prison.
Brynn’s life is in danger, therefore Erik Morgan has been assigned to protect her. Amongst all this danger, an attraction is teetering the edge of desire for a possible romance. Erik is a skilled security bodyguard who has taken a personal interest in protecting Brynn. Even with all the dangerous activity nothing stops Brynn from maintaining her public appearances in the courtroom.
This is a character driven story. The story is divided between Brynn working on cases, Lindsey working on solving the crimes, and Erik providing security protection.
Brynn’s character is confident and self assured. Brynn’s defiant behavior adds an entertaining edge to a dangerous situation. Brynn rattled Erik’s moral code and rules. Never before has a client stepped on his toes going head to head with him. She is feisty. Brynn is a defense attorney trying to prepare for her case while being distracted by threats from an escaped prisoner whom she helped convict three years ago. Her nerves are frayed when her focus should be on her client. Having a convicted murderer loose on the streets causes stress, confusion, frustration and fear to her already frazzled nerves.
Even though this a criminal detective story there are layers of a client-bodyguard relationship brewing. There are three components woven together: the detective, defense attorney, and bodyguard. I love confident and strong willed women who take control of their lives standing up to men. This was a fast paced high energy story that was entertaining and exciting to read.
Good book - so confused on the title
Why is it called Desperate Girls? I read the book and when it showed the cover I didn’t think it was the same book.
But, engaging story, for me through a few multiple hour “lap naps” where my baby will only sleep if held on my lap. So 5 stars for that.
Romance and Suspense
Laura Griffin is one of my favorite authors. I enjoy reading everything she writes and find her books hard to put down. What I love most about her stories is that they are well written and I can never figure out what will happen next. DESPERATE GIRLS is suspenseful with an intriguing storyline and engaging characters. It is a compelling story that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. This one has it all, a great story, wonderful endearing characters, romance and edge of your seat suspense.
This story revolves around Brynn and Erik. A crazy man is after Brynn and Erik has been hired to protect her. Brynn is an attorney and she worries about her safety while working on an important case and going to court every day. Brynn is smart, beautiful and also stubborn. She continually fights Erik because she likes to be in control and doesn’t like to be told what to do, even if Erik is trying to keep her safe.
Erik is dedicated and loves working in private security but he hates trying to protect uncooperative people like Brynn. Erik is the lead for the team protecting Brynn and he finds himself immediately attracted to her. Erik is the strong silent type and he is also fierce, loyal and protective. He takes his job seriously and he knows he should stay away from Brynn but finds it difficult to resist her.
I enjoyed all the sparks flying between Erik and Brynn. They argue and fight with each other but underneath, there is a smoldering attraction. They are both workaholics and have put work ahead of relationships. I highly recommend this suspenseful romance.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
