Exciting sci-fi merc story with a noir P.I. Feel

I read an Advanced Reader Copy of this novel.

In book four of PR Adams “Lancers” series, we have the protagonists of the first three books assembled as a team. Benji’s (book 2) hired Go and Jason (book 3) to form a team to sell the technology they acquired. Along the way to a backwater planet, they team up with Chanda (book 1), and take on a job with a mining firm to find a spy who’s stealing company secrets.

The team’s relationship is strained from the secrets each member has - they haven’t learned to trust one another yet, and some of them have some pretty dark secrets.

I found the story to be a thrilling page turner, and stayed up too late a couple of nights reading when I should have been turning in. Adams once again does a great job breathing life into his characters (protagonist and antagonist), making them human and relatable.

I think Adams does a great job showing growth in his characters across the arcs of his stories, and this one was no different. They live and breathe, and change a little story to story - these are flawed folks - very talented and interesting, but flawed. I enjoy seeing them rise to a challenge, warts and all.

If you enjoyed the first three books, or want a good sci-fi military/cyberpunk/corporate espionage tale, I highly recommend “Dark Secrets”.
