Publisher Description
A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of America’s most enduring authors, in a commemorative hardcover edition
In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
The masterpiece of Steinbeck’s later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean, and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah’s Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
John Steinbeck’s books are a mainstay of high-school reading lists for a reason. East of Eden, in particular, supplies precisely the kind of generational drama and grand moral philosophizing that make for a great term paper. But this Cain-and-Abel parable about the power of good and evil is also as juicy and compelling as a soap opera. One warning: The novel is definitely of its era. Men make America go round and the female characters tend to be the prostitute, sociopath, or boozy religious nut.

WARNING
Do not buy this nook until fix the formatting. It is really messed up. Chapters are on one page and then cut off. There are no breaks between paragraphs. How did this get past quality control? I really hope this is not indicative of the ibookstore's quality overall. I wonder how to report this? Or get a refund... (and yea, I tried redownloading with no luck.)
Brilliant writing
Some of the finest writing produced by an American legend. This book is so unbelievably good. I don't have the iBook, just an old fashioned bound book, but this is so, so good.
