Publisher Description
The narratives in this book are of journeys made in three wildernesses - on a coastal island, in a Western mountain range, and on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The four men portrayed here have different relationships to their environment, and they encounter each other on mountain trails, in forests and rapids, sometimes with reserve, sometimes with friendliness, sometimes fighting hard across a philosophical divide.

Balanced viewpoints
In an era of high environmental concern where any development is scorned by environmentalists, this book addresses the balance to take what is needed from the environment but in a socially responsible way. It is a sequence of three events between a former head of the Sierra Club and three developers-a miner, the developer of Hilton Head, and Floyd Domini, the builder of the Glen Canyon Dam. Nice to read a book that presents both sides in a readable, non confrontational manner. In an era of “I’m right, you’re wrong,” more books like this would be beneficial.
