Mallery's third novel (after Three Sisters) set on fictional Blackberry Island, Wash., explores the boundaries of love and loyalty for a quirky mom, her lesbian partner, and her two adult daughters. Flighty, immature Bonnie Wentworth runs the Blackberry Preserves antique store, which barely stays afloat between Bonnie's buying trips, leaving oldest daughter Nina to assume the "mom" role for her sister, Avery, and for Bonnie too. A crisis in Avery's marriage forces the sisters, and Bonnie and her partner, Bertie, to re-examine their responsibilities to one another and themselves, while an ugly cast-off painting changes all of their lives. The men in the sisters' lives Nina's first love, Dylan, and young admirer, Kyle, and Avery's abandoned husband Kevin along with an unbelievably well-trained stray dog, Penny, are amazingly accommodating during an often dark and difficult tug-of-love between the women as they tame their fears, take responsibility and hit Antiques Roadshow pay dirt. "I'm going to go for my dreams and see what happens," Nina decides. And that's the joy for all of us who were rooting on the sidelines.

Once again, Susan Mallery has written an engrossing novel of unique characters who exhibit the curiosity, inner fears, and hopes that all of us have tucked inside. This book returns to Blackberry Island in a way that feels like home and makes the reader want to live there and know those people personally. It's a VERY satisfying read!
Another great one from Susan Mallery!
This is the story of Nina Wentworth and her crazy family. Nina's mom, Bonnie, bothered me the most with her carefree, I DON'T HAVE ANY RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE EVERYONE TAKES CARE OF ME, attitude. She's the one responsible for Nina's need to take care of everyone. Nina's been caring for her mother and sister, Averil, since she was 11 years old. Crazy! Thank God for Bertie, who's Bonnie's lover/partner, and is always trying to get Bonnie to lose the Peter Pan syndrome.
Outside of all the family drama, Nina is a very lucky woman. Kyle, Navy fighter pilot, and Dylan, doctor extraordinaire, both want her. WOW! That's a very hard choice for any woman to make.
This story is so well written. There's so much going on but it's woven together so well that it just flows the entire length of the book. Characters are introduced and grew perfectly with the story. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't tear myself away from this wonderful little place called Blackberry Island. I'm so excited to see what's next from Susan Mallery.
