This is worth the wait!
The Christiansen family has been such a joy to read. This one was no exception. I like that this novel focused on the matriarch Ingrid Christiansen and patriarch John Christiansen. It is great to see their relationship in a new light. They are at the empty nester stage of life and trying to figure out what to do with their time. John knows that he would like to take Ingrid on a European trip because he knows that something needs to change in their relationship. The cracks in their marriage are revealed through a series of different circumstances. You understand how important communication is between couples and how things not dealt with can fester. You see John trying to fix things and Ingrid just doing things to keep busy. There were some harsh dialogues between them and it made me tear up. You will experience a variety of emotions while reading this book. You see that marriage takes work and that we cannot expect each other to read our minds.
I loved the name of the book and this quote that explained why the author chose the name.
It’s a miracle how, when an evergreen burns, the pinecones burst open, dropping seeds into fertile soil of the charred land. Saplings now edge our property, sprouts of green against the white landscape.

We make not see or understand why things are happening but we have to trust that God is in control. We may see dying as the end but nature has shown us that sometimes it is a new beginning. There are times when we have to let go of our vision for our future and listen to the voice of God directing us.
