Publisher Description

Exile: Four Lives Driven Out is the second guide in the Themes strand of the Interactive Reading Guides — companions that follow a single idea across several thinkers at once. Between 1933 and 1941, the rise of Nazism drove much of the German-speaking world's intellectual life into exile. This guide reads four of those exiles — Stefan Zweig, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, and Hannah Arendt — for whom exile was not a subject observed from a distance but the catastrophe they lived, and which reshaped the thought each produced. They are arranged as a spectrum, from exile as a grief that could not be survived to exile as a vantage that gave birth to new thought.
At one end stands Zweig, for whom the loss of his world proved unbearable; then Freud, uprooted at the very end of his life; then Mann, who turned exile into a public moral role, carrying the true Germany with him; and finally Arendt, who made statelessness itself the ground of a new political philosophy. A single thread runs throughout — home: what is lost, what can be carried, and whether it can be rebuilt in language, memory, or thought when it can no longer be inhabited in fact. A comparative section sets the four side by side, and a closing turns the spectrum's question toward the reader — and toward a present in which exile is, for millions, not a hypothetical.
Part of the Interactive Reading Guides series, it is meant to be read alongside the original works, which it names but never reproduces: a companion to your own encounter with them, and all commentary is original.
