Great end to a great series!
This is the third and final book in the Red Light: Silver Girls series and I hate to see it end! I have loved all the characters that DK has created in this series. This final installment is every bit as good as the other two, but it is more gritty and raw! As with all books in this series, Fall Gently can be read as a stand-alone.
Veronica (Roni) Glenn had a very tough life. Her mother died when she was young and she was left with her stepfather, since her grandparents were elderly. At 16 he started sexually abusing her, and finally at 17 years old, she left to live on the streets. She felt it was better than being in that house with that man. Roni lived in a shelter when she could and then Vince came into her life. He promised her safety, protection, and love. This lasted for a week before Vince really showed who he was, the leader of the Yesler Street Gang who physically and sexually abused women and pushed them into prostitution. Roni was his favorite so she was forced to live with him and put up with his abuse. She was befriended by Jackie Carver, another prostitute that would help Roni after she was beaten by Vince. Jackie too was fooled by Vince’s charm, but she was making plans to escape Vince and bring Roni with her. Roni was able to escape, but Jackie was not so lucky.
Dawson Carver was a previous member of the Yesler Street Gang and he spent months trying to find Roni after he got out of prison. He had made promises to his sister Jackie that he would keep her safe and give Roni the chance to start a new life. When Dawson finally found Roni, she was working for the Network in Federal, Idaho working as a prostitute. When he showed up, Roni was terrified that Vince had found her and sent Dawson to bring her back to Seattle, until Dawson told her that Vince was dead. He also had to give her the news that Jackie was murdered. Roni was devastated that her friend was dead, but was relieved that Vince was dead. The thing she just didn’t understand was why was Dawson here to help her.
Dawson couldn’t’ save his sister, but he was going to do everything in his power to help Roni. He stayed in Federal to convince her to leave prostitution and return to Seattle with him to make a fresh start now that Vince was dead and the Yesler Street Gang had disbanded. He offered to help her get settled and find a job that didn’t involve prostitution. Dawson was trying hard to fight his attraction to Roni because he felt he had nothing to offer her and he had secrets that if revealed, she would hate him.
Roni grew to trust and enjoy her time with Dawson. She was letting down her guard. She was developing feelings for Dawson and wanted to have a real relationship with him, but she had a hard time adjusting to his kindness. She was waiting for him to be like Vince, but he never mistreated her or took advantage of her. There is so much I want to tell you because I really loved this book and this series, but you really need to read it for yourself.
This love story had some real difficult things to read about, but it was amazing to see how the characters developed and overcame the tragedies and adversities. Their relationship grew from friendship to love and with that growth it allowed them to heal from the scars of the past. This story truly touched my heart and I loved every painful page!
I am sad to see the Red Light: Silver Girls end, but I am ready for the next DK adventure.
