APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Even if you’ve never cracked open a Raymond Chandler book before, you may have heard of Philip Marlowe. This wisecracking Los Angeles private investigator has been a huge influence on pretty much every mystery writer who followed. We recommend all of Marlowe’s cases—there are only seven—but 1940’s Farewell, My Lovely is a great starting point. Honestly, the plot isn’t that important. What’s amazing is the speed with which things move—it’s like a body getting thrown through a closed door, which, by the way, happens on literally the second page. A roguish hero with a heart of tarnished gold who’s even quicker with a smart-aleck quip or a shot of bourbon than he is with his gun, Marlowe is absolutely timeless.
