No crime is too atrocious to save a beloved.

Storm spirit Reiko meets the peculiar girl, Yuki, at the Palace of a Thousand Rays to continue the story of Immortal Ayame and Warlord Kyuzo on the road to Sunlit City.

Nara winter is harsh, and enemies wait around the bend. The entourage arrives at the capital with a loss of life. Yet the dying is only beginning.

When the emperor crowns Sora, the Ishii clashes head-on with Prince Hissing Blade. In the twisted games the dark diviner plays Ayame becomes a hostage, and to save her Kyuzo must break an oath to his emperor.

The Sinai War begins in the second installment of the Royal Diviner Trilogy, and heavy losses mount on both sides.

Epic book #2 of this series!

ARC Review:

4/5 stars

1/5 spice

I thought the first book in this series was good, but this one was phenomenal. It picks up right where the last book ended, and it had me right on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book. You know the joke about how as readers we talk about how we tell someone a book will make us cry, scream, throw the book, and ripped our hearts out right before we recommend they read it? This is that book.

We see characters grow and realize they even when they thought they were doing the right thing, sometimes they weren’t seeing the bigger picture and how their actions affected many. We see a goddess wrestle with morality— what is good? What is evil? How do we decide if someone is good or bad? And how do we decide when evil deeds are necessary for the greater good? We see a character who seemed to be finding their stride stumble and falter. Will they recover and be the answer to the plight of Nara?

I was excited to see my theories be spot on, but even better was the author throwing in a twist at the end for a beloved side character (possibly some others) I didn’t see coming.

My only issue is that knowing the questions I have, I’m afraid one more book won’t be enough. Hissing Blade still needs to be dealt with. And Ayame has 3 more years before she goes back to the immortal realm. And then once she’s there for possibly hundreds of years trying to fix the in between, what happens? Does she fix it? What else happens? I feel like this needs to be 4 books to adequately answer all the questions and tell the story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
