"Fourth Wing will have your heart pounding from beginning to end... A fantasy like you've never read before." ―#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Enter an intense world of love, danger, and dragons in this enticing romantic fantasy. Violet Sorrengail hoped to follow in her late father’s footsteps and become a scribe, but her fierce mother—the general of the kingdom of Navarre—has other ideas. She forces Violet to enter the cutthroat fight to become one of the elite dragon riders who are sworn to protect the kingdom, putting her in danger…and in the crosshairs of a brutal but undeniably sexy rival. Rebecca Yarros expertly blends epic world-building and a simmering enemies-to-lovers romance. We love the impressive depth of Violet’s character: she’s steely and determined, believing in herself despite her physical limitations. Fans of the Hunger Games or Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series will love diving into this fascinating, violent world.
Romance author Yarros (The Things We Leave Unfinished) blends the epic tale of a reluctant dragon rider's coming-of-age with a sexy dark academia aesthetic in her astounding debut fantasy. Fearsome General Sorrengail demands that her children follow in her footsteps as dragon riders—even her youngest, Violet, who has trained her whole life to be a scribe like her late father. Forced to join a deadly war academy, Violet is unprepared to perform the fatal tasks all cadets must complete to become dragon riders. The odds are stacked against her due both to her delicate stature and to her mother's reputation: it was Sorrengail who gave the order to execute all separatists in the last rebellion. The rebels' orphaned children have all been conscripted to the academy, putting a target on Violet's back. Worse, her own brooding but handsome wing leader, third-year student Xaden Riorson, is the son of the separatists' leader. Meanwhile, the wards that protect the city are failing, but as danger draws nearer, clever Violet grows stronger, discovering that riding dragons may be her destiny after all. Yarros's worldbuilding is intricate without being overbearing, setting the stage for Violet's satisfying growth into a force to be reckoned with. Readers will be spellbound and eager for more.
Book of the year
This book will be long talked about by ALL readers! If you have disliked all other fantasy books (me) then you need to RUN and read this one now and discover what an extraordinary genre it can be when it’s done well.
Spectacular and Exciting
Amazing story and spectacular world building! I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
A Perfect Adventure
This book was exhilarating to escape into! I loved the dragons, enemies-to-lovers, side characters, and the two main characters. The world felt real and well built. Violet and Xander felt relatable, fully developed, flawed and perfect for the plot. I stayed up all night reading this, and have decided to immediately reread it again tonight while I wait for book two.
