Publisher Description
"Every man has two countries," Henri de Bornier once said, "his own and France." Indeed, France has captivated us for centuries. Here, in this compelling history from acclaimed historian Marshall B. Davison, is its story: from prehistory to its conquest by Julius Caesar; from its invasion by the Franks, who gave us the name we use today, to the reign of Charlemagne; from the rule of the Bourbon monarchs, who reached their apex under the Sun King, Louis XIV, to the bloody days of the French Revolution; from the ruthless rise and reign of Napoleon Bonaparte to the brutal Nazi occupation during World War II.

Good but could have been better
Though it was a good succinct summary, I didn’t appreciate the political editorial comments, such as saying that the intolerance of the Muslims today might be the fault of Christians in France. I lived through the 70s, the time when this book was written, and do not remember the word “intolerance” being used like that until several decades later. When this kind of thing happens, I sometimes wonder if political remarks are inserted at the time of republishing; in this case, that would be 2015. Back in the 70s, true historians like Mr. Davis were usually more objective in their writing, and stuck to the facts.
