Glaucus; Or, The Wonders of the Shore

Charles Kingsley was an English priest, historian and novelist, famous mostly for his works Hypatia, Hereward the Wake and Westward Ho! Seriously worried about social problems, Kingsley published his first novels Yeast and Alton Locke, comprising labour and social inequality issues. Due to his interest in history, Kingsley then turned to writing historical novels and achieved a great success after publishing his works Hereward the Wake and Westward Ho! 

First published in 1855, Charles Kingsley's Glaucus, or the Wonders of the Shore is an excellent work on natural history. An interesting fact: the term pteridomania, defining the Victorian fern fever, was coined by Kingsley in this book!
