It is a well done mystery with lots of good detail, dialogue
This is, I believe, the first of the Miss Silver mysteries and it is quite different from some of the later ones in the series in that Miss Silver is a much more "professional" sort of investigator. She's got a very different (and somewhat less sympathetic or friendly) personality; her previous life as a governor barely figures; there is really no description of her appearance or clothes (and none of her living room which features prominently in future books) nor of some of the affectations appear in the future. There is no mention of her friend Frank, at Scotland Yard -- in fact Scotland Yard and the police really don't feature. The plot is very interesting and quite complex. At times I had to go back and read or reread to make sure that I was keeping the characters straight and I'm not sure that I have. However, it is a well done mystery with lots of good detail, dialogue, engaging characters and several of the characters actually have about as much to do with solving the mystery as Miss Silver does. I liked this one, and Miss Silver's personality has some dramatic changes in the future books, of which there are many . I've read a lot of them and while there is a certain sameness, some of them are rather light while this is quite detailed.
If you want to read a good mystery from that period start with this one and move forward through Mrs. Wentworth's titles.
