Great story, terrible scan and publish
The story by Piers Anthony is great as always, but it’s very annoying that in the age of AI, the publisher can’t be bothered to run the text through an AI check, and we are expected to pay full price for an error plagued book. For example:
“He bacerne the roc”. Clearly, the word should be “became”. I don’t know what “bacarne” is as it is not a word. The most basic spell checker would flag this.
Next, “Chapter 4. Grace#i.”
This chapter is named after a character introduced in this chapter named “Grace’l”.
As Anthony’s books are famous for making plays on words, when I come across a misspelled word, I have to pause and try to figure out if this is a pun or an error.
A smaller but frequent problem in this book is the combination of two short statements by different characters into a single paragraph. This is a no-no, as a single paragraph should contain speaking from a single character.
When books have multiple, easily correctable errors, it ruins the mind’s image of the flow of the story, and Heaven Cent has too many for me to enjoy the story.
