Publisher Description
Southworth's novel maniupulates many of the tropes of sentimental fiction in a uniquely subversive way. She stuffs it all within her pages- the damsel in distress, the dastardly villian, the orphan- but ultimately achieves a surprisingly feminist ideology. Her heroine, Capitola, is self reliant, creative, and genuinely heroic. She romps through Southworth's pages comically overturning many of the 19th century's most concretized stereotypes about femininity.

Fun story
Capitola is a hilariously independent young lady. There is plenty of drama in this story, as the alternate title of "Capitola, the Madcap" suggests. The sequel to it is "Capitola's Peril", which is probably my favorite of the two. There are cliches and expected plot twists in a few places, but it's fun to read.
So many mysteries!

A literary Masterpiece!!!
