Updated for 2027. Most HiSET® prep books squeeze the Reading subtest into 30 or 40 pages of an all-in-one paperback, then hand you a stack of untaught passages and ask you to figure it out. This book is built the opposite way: one focused study course, on one subtest, that teaches you to read like the HiSET expects — one skill at a time, from the ground up.

The HiSET Reasoning Through Language Arts — Reading subtest is 50 questions in about 65 minutes. It is not a memory test. It is a comprehension and reasoning test. You'll see literary passages, informational articles, opinion pieces, and arguments — and the questions ask whether you can find the main idea, draw inferences, follow an argument, recognize tone and author's purpose, and figure out a word's meaning from context. Those are the same skills you already use every day when you read mail, news, a contract, or a long text from a coworker. The test just asks for them in a tighter, timed way. This book teaches each of those skills explicitly, before asking you to use it.

Every chapter takes one reading skill, explains it in plain English (what it is, why the test cares, how to spot it in a passage), shows it applied to a real passage step by step, then gives you one or two warm-up "Try It" items with full explanations. Only after that do you reach end-of-chapter practice. "Common Mistake" callouts warn you about the answer choices the test writers always include to trip you up. "Test Tip" boxes show you the pacing and elimination tricks that turn slow passages into fast points.
