When Anita recognizes the handiwork of the Harlequin, ninja-like paranormal assassins, she suspects they're in the employ of the Mother of All Darkness, the legendary vampire queen who wants to reincarnate herself in Anita's body and take advantage of her mingled vampire and lycanthrope bloodlines. Complicating matters are a marshal who detests Anita for no apparent reason and a psychopathic deputy who wants to kill her. The action occasionally bogs down in the sexual trysts Anita indulges in to stoke her supernatural abilities, but for the most part, Hamilton goes back to basics and delivers a sleek, hard-boiled page-turner.

I hope she never tires of writing this storyline
Laurell remains an excellent story teller with the ability to take us into her world without complaint. With most authors I find I have to struggle against my disbelief - no so in either the Anita Or Meredith books. Please keep them coming Laurell!
This book furthers Anita's evolution as well as other favored characters. I remain please Anita is able to rise above her circumstances and find solutions which don't occur to the reader. This is the artful part of excellent writing. What make this writing even more compelling is it is just as enjoyable when reread.
Thank you Laurell for new circumstances, new characters and a fresh look at characters we love and hate!
Different - not great
I enjoy this series. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I had enjoyed previous books. The entire storyline happens outside St Louis and doesn't include Anita's usual lovers. I missed them; it reminded me of watching a TV show that only includes the main character and a few great guest stars. You watch it and think "what happened to the supporting cast?" It was different than most of the other books: not bad but not as good.
Good Outline, but where's the rest of the book
Am I the only one feeling a little cheated by the rushed ending? I mean did she ever come out and say weather that character that was incredibly "still" after being shot at was actually alive or not. I mean she mentions that he could be "hurt or worse" just because she popped wise with the big-bad-baddy once again, but he is never mentioned again. All that space dedicated to his personal life, family, hobbies even and he's not worth a so much as a second glance. Did she get bored and just decide close enough to done for government work? I mean more time was spent setting up the next great villain she'll face than actually dealing with this one. It feels like she wrote a book her heart was invested in. A lot of people complain that there has been too much sex and not enough action. I feel like this was just swinging the pendulum in the opposite direction. Goes to show, complain enough and you can get force fed the crap you've been asking for.
