Faver's unsatisfying second Dark Horse Cowboys novel (after Do or Die Cowboy), set in fictitious Langston, Tex., leaves much to be desired. Since the death of her mother, the dainty and lovely Misty Dalton has been taking care of her brothers and her drunken, sickly father. When her father succumbs to his illness and her older brother is murdered on the same day, she is devastated but determined to provide for her younger brother. Serious-minded Colton Garrett, the oldest of the Garrett brothers (who anchor the series), offers to form a partnership with her and save her ranch from foreclosure. Colton and Misty are immediately smitten with each other, and despite his stern father's objections, Colton makes plans for a future with Misty. The couple navigate their relationship around constant threats to Misty's livelihood and safety, as there are many dark secrets plaguing her family that she has no knowledge of. Unfortunately, there's no chemistry between the lovers, and the action falls short. Only dedicated series fans will see this through to the end.

This author is relatively new and this is the second book from her that I have read (second in this series as well). I loved the first book and this book I think, topped the first one. The characters that she has created for her series are so realistic.
The series revolves around the Garretts. Most of the prior characters play nice sized roles in this book as well. I appreciate that as they are like old friends that you don't want to lose touch with. Seeing the continuation of their stories just helps to ground you into the current story.
She has put in enough suspense that it will keep you glued to your e-reader. The plot was wonderful and flowed smoothly. I was able to picture the action just like it was a movie playing in my mind. I was totally enraptured with this story right from the beginning. I can't wait for more stories. I have fallen in love with the Garretts.
