How to Oil Paint a Cockatoo

This is the fifth book in our How to Oil Paint – Intermediate Series.  Professional artist Barbara Newton and student Jo Murcutt take you through the learning process, giving you expert advice and at the same time showing you some of the common problems that an emerging artist faces.

In this book, we learn how light can be used to give a painting depth, interest and realism.  We chose the beautiful Australian Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo because of it’s lovely pure white feathers against an Australian Eucalyptus tree, whose bark is full of texture and contrasting colours.

As in all of our books, there are easy-to-follow instructions with over one hundred corresponding photos.  We list the materials that we used and how to draw the bird before we begin the painting process.  There are plenty of tips and ideas that an amateur artist can learn from.
