Chapter 1: Isabelle’s Story
Isabelle heads out via auto to Carriveau and meets Gaetan Dubois, a young fellow about her age. Gaetan has lately been discharged from jail to battle in the war. He is en route to join a regiment to battle for France. He welcomes Isabelle to go along with him. Isabelle and Gaetan land at Le Jardin. In spite of the fact that he has guaranteed to bring Isabelle with him to fight in the war, he leaves in the morning while she is still snoozing.
The French strengths surrender to the Germans. The nation is isolated into an Occupied Zone, controlled by the Germans, and a Free Zone, controlled by the French with a base camp in Vichy. Before long, the Germans land in Carriveau. Chief Wolfgang Beck, an officer in the Wehrmacht, lands at Le Jardin and reports that it is his new billet, or transitory lodgings.
Isabelle destroys a Nazi notice around the local area. Through this carelessness, she meets individuals from the French Resistance, which is simply starting to shape. They offer her an occupation; dispersing flyers about the late Nazi monstrosities in France.
Through Beck, Vianne discovers that Antoine is a captive in a camp in Germany. He sees to it that her letters and bundles are conveyed to Antoine. Meanwhile, the Gestapo starts getting the names of Jews in Carriveau. Beck solicits Vianne to gather a rundown from Jews working at the school. Along the way, the auto comes up short on fuel. Isabelle gets cleared...
