NYC Nights 9

Whereas 2020 was the beginning of the Covid-19 saga, 2021 was it’s continued evolution, the understanding it wasn’t going anywhere (no matter how many people acted like it was). The surreal horror of watching a majority of people unwilling to do the bare minimum (vaccination, wearing a mask, keeping distance from others) was frustrating. The leaders of commerce and the political landscape also demonstrated a bizarre focus on economic health vs human health. More important for money to flow vs shutting down aspects of society to better combat the pandemic (a practice still in effect as of the writing of this ebook).



Amongst this backdrop of stupidity I was challenged with my continued journey of capturing nocturnal moments roaming New York City. There were no quarantine mandates active, so freedom to travel was allowed. My mindset was a bit better, considering one the main perks of this imaging project is less people around during the middle of the night (social distancing). And yet many of the folk wandering around me while conducting shoots were mask less, as well as getting weirdly close when passing by. Didn’t really understand what necessitated that, very tiring.



As for the shoots themselves, a healthy amount of quality moments experienced. Re-visiting a number of sites, complimented by a smattering of new, such as Industrial Long Island City and the Empire State Building. I allowed myself to embrace the night, photographing some incredibly atmospheric moments. Wasn’t a monstrous year of imaging (only 21 shoots), yet the quality displayed speaks for itself.
