Table of Contents Trouble
I have only one problem with this volume: it will only show page one of the table of contents. This is a big problem when the volume holds 50 books!
Good book collection, poor interface
Because of the interface design, it’s just one long run on series of thousands and thousands of pages - when you’re in an individual book you have no way to see how far you are through it, and as others have mentioned, the table of contents is tricky to get to or understand.
However, as I’ve finished my own “reading lists” of books that i wanted to read, I’ve found myself continually returning to this collection, accepting its design flaws and just working my way through one book after another to discover books I’d have never otherwise considered reading. Especially some of the children’s classics- like Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables, The Prince and the Pauper, Call of the Wild, even The Jungle Book etc., many of which I’d had read as a child, some only heard of- I’m LOVING many of these trips down memory lane or new discoveries. Plenty of the “adult” books are delightful revelations as well. Some turn out not to my taste and i get a sense and move on, but it’s a fantastic guided tour through the classics without need of spending time researching GoodReads or reviews to figure out what’s next. Loving the many distinctive older classics like Around the World in 80 Days and others from the 1700s and 1800s; book by book I’m getting a patchwork picture of life, times and thought processes of our ancestors - their surprising similarities and their common differences (physiognomy was a big thing way back when!), not to mention their often greatly superior command of language, far richer and more nuanced than most of today’s authors can write.
Just wish Apple would invest in getting a programmer to fix the interface to give this great collection a user interface befitting, rather than one the equivalent of navigating a stack of loose pages 10 feet high.
