Let down
Books 5&6: Just not up to the first 4 books. This one in particular. I found myself wishing the ending would come soon, sooner, soonest.
I found it disjointed. And found myself - for the first time in 30 years - fairly indifferent to Lyra or her fate. Sad face.
Better than expected
I loved His Dark Materials and La Belle Sauvage, but didn’t like The Secret Commonwealth. So I went into this one not sure how it was going to go. The Rose Field is gripping; I didn’t want to put it down or have it end. The story is compelling enough that I wonder if I would like The Secret Commonwealth if I read it again.
Speaking of which, there are a lot of characters and subplots to keep track of, so if it’s been awhile since you’ve read The Secret Commonwealth, you should reread it before starting The Rose Field. I had to stop a lot and look up things before remembering who was who.
While I enjoyed the ending of The Rose Field, there are some loose threads that are never tied up, and I can see how the ending may frustrate some readers, nevertheless I will miss these characters and their stories.
