A touching story
This book covers some sensitive topics, but they’re very important and I thought the author wrote a beautiful story. Iris is ready to start over and put her past failed suicide attempts behind her. Now, she just has to get to Cheshire Bay, where her fresh start awaits her. On the plane, she recognizes the guy in the seat next to hers. He’s the nerd she picked on in high school. He was younger and smarter and the perfect target for the bullies. Holden has grown up and filled out and is pleasing to the eyes. He’s dealt with his insecurities and is looking forward to his new job at the university in Victoria. Now, he’s stuck on a flight next to his high school bully. As they’re talking he tells her that Jeremy, the biggest jock at St. Jude’s, joined the astronomy club he started and they became best friends. He now plays for the NFL. When the the plane has to make an emergency landing, Holden makes the decision to do a road trip so he’s not late to his first day on the job. Iris goes with him. I won’t leave only spoilers about what takes place, but I will say, this was a touching story about forgiveness, kindness, and unexpected outcomes. Grab your copy and see what happens.
Two paths cross at the right time
I have to say that the very first paragraph opened my mind of how the story led to where Iris was headed. Her reaction to sitting next to Holden on the flight from Toronto helped explain how she was in a hallway figuring out where to go. It is clear from that beginning that Iris really needed something more to patch her life together to find herself. There were moments that made it clear that Holden needed it just as much as she did, just different lives before boarding the plane. Only thing to note that this is an adult novel and does have some intimacy included, though it seemed to just be there to show how they were falling for each other. Setting described well but really just ends and then moves on.
I really enjoyed it, and I look forward to reading more by H.M. Shander in the future.
