“Kleypas is a romance gem, a queen among a vast royal court of historical romance authors.” —Entertainment Weekly
A stunning new reprint of a classic Lisa Kleypas love story about a man whos decided to forgo all romantic entanglements... until he meets a beautiful woman with a secret...
They call him the Monk of Bow Street
Sir Ross Cannon, magistrate and head of the Bow Street Runners, has spent the past few years apprehending the most dangerous criminals in London. He’s driven and disciplined, a man to be feared. His personal needs have been set aside, his days and nights consumed by the determined pursuit of justice.
Until Lady Sophia Sydney, a beautiful young woman with a tarnished past, comes to ask for employment. Ross knows a woman like Sophia doesn’t belong in the rough-and-tumble world of Bow Street, but he gives in to temptation and hires her as his assistant. Day by day the attraction between them grows, until neither of them can ignore the power of their mutual desire.
But Sophia has a secret . . . and when Ross discovers the tragic link between their pasts, any chance of being with him will vanish. All they have are a few nights of pleasure, before Sophia will be forced to leave the man she’s fallen hopelessly in love with.
What she doesn’t count on is how much Ross is willing to risk for the sake of a woman who’s awakened his heart.
Against the grit and glamour of London's crime-fighting Bow Street operation, Kleypas weaves an exceptional early-Victorian-era romance that is driven by much more than mere sexual attraction and sizzling loves scenes (of which there are plenty here). Political, social and familial conflicts heat up this story, and not all of the resolutions come easily. Ever since her younger brother died in prison, Sophia Sydney has had one goal in mind to find the magistrate who sent her brother to prison, worm her way into his office and his heart and then destroy him both politically and emotionally. Handsome Ross Cannon, London's most powerful and irreproachable magistrate, is not the hard-hearted devil she had expected, however. Known as the Monk of Bow Street for his celibacy following his wife's death, Ross is fair and forgiving, which Sophia soon learns when she takes up a position as his office clerk and housekeeper. The chemistry between the pair is palpable, but several obstacles stand in the way of their happiness, not the least of which is the shadow of Sophia's brother. With the exception of Sophia, who is given to histrionics, Kleypas's characters are well drawn and refreshingly levelheaded. Even her villain, a famed "thieftaker," displays surprising dimensions. Through deft plotting and simple yet stylish prose, Kleypas distinguishes herself as a master of her craft.
Definitely among my favorite of Lisa Kleypas. It’s the male lead that really keeps you fascinated. You want a man like this one, morally solid and exciting in bedroom! V.L.L-Book Lover
Lady Sophia's lover
Loved this book! Wish there was a sequel would love to know what happens to her brother.
I enjoyed reading this book. So far the series has been very good and I would recommend it. Start at the beginning though don’t miss out on the whole experience. This book would still be good as just the one book but why limit yourself.
