Myrtle Reed was an American author, poet, journalist, and philanthropist. She was born in 1874 in Chicago. She was the youngest child in the family and the only daughter. Myrtle Reed graduated from the West Division High School. During the studying she edited the school's newspaper called The Voice. She had insomniac and she has been prescribed sleeping drafts. Myrtly Reed died in 1911 because of an overdose of sleeping powder, which she took with suicidal intent in her flat. She was 36 years old.

Lavender and Old Lace by Myrtle Reed is a Victorian romance novel. It was published in 1902. This book tells the story about some distinguished women. Each of these women has an unmatchable experience with love. The book follows in Reed’s long history of inciting laughter and tears in her readers through provocative prose. She was often witty in dialogue and dispensing in advice, while warily skirting any moral issues.
