Publisher Description

An ex-con, Nora Dockson pulled herself out of the gutter and became an appeals lawyer. She works only for convicted felons. She's sure her current client didn't murder his wife. The jury was misled by testimony from an expert witness who reconstructed the crime based on bloodstain patterns. She'll prove the so-called expert made leaps of logic incompatible with the latest forensic science.

But a family emergency pulls her away from the case and back to her unsavory roots. Events spiral out of control. Instead of arguing in a courtroom, she's once again on the dangerous turf of her childhood. And this time she may not escape alive.

A Derringer and Macavity Award finalist acclaimed for "sharp storytelling" (Publishers Weekly), Diana Deverell has "a gift that grabs the reader so one cares about every character in the story" (reader review).

In Lay Bare the Lie, Diana brings you a gutsy, big-hearted heroine, a chilling plot, and a complex and passionate supporting cast doing their best to bring mercy to a broken justice system. "A great character, a great series—I highly recommend it to people." (Stephen Campbell, CrimeFiction.FM)

Don't Miss this Nora Dockson thriller!

If you enjoy Diana Deverell’s Nora Dockson legal thriller series, you’re in for a real treat! “Lay Bare the Lie,” the sixth book in the series, tops all the others in so many ways. There’s a gripping I-didn’t-see-that-coming plot, the relationships among the continuing characters are evolving, and the descriptions of Oregon and Washington are wonderful. This time Nora, her half-sister Hunter, and their mother, Patty-Jean, are the targets of a kidnap/murder plot. Patty-Jean has convinced Hunter to accompany her to the annual Roundup western days in Pendleton, OR, by pretending that she will introduce Hunter to her biological father. Then Patty-Jean disappears. Panicked, Hunter calls Nora for help. When Nora arrives in Pendleton, they receive a ransom note demanding $100,000. Next, Hunter disappears - and things grow steadily more complex, and more dangerous, from there. The kidnapper turns out to be a murderous psychopath with ties to Nora’s past and a vendetta against the Dockson women. It’s up to Nora, aided by her state trooper boyfriend Kent Harper, to lay bare the lies and save her mother and her sister.

It wouldn’t be a Nora Dockson novel without a legal case, and this time Channing Palmer, Nora’s colleague at the Legal Resource Center, takes center stage. She’s working on a “Bogus Expert Witness Project,” trying to free a client convicted of murder solely by the testimony of a dubious “expert witness” on blood stains and spatters. Determined to prove the expert witness wrong, Channing enrolls in a class on how to interpret blood at a crime scene. Fans of CSI will revel in the detail of Channing’s course. Like Nora, she will also “lay bare the lie” of the expert witness.

The author is a master at putting you inside a scene so vividly you’d swear you had actually lived through it. I’ve never been to Pendleton, but I feel I could walk down a street there and recognize everything. Nora, Hunter, and Patty-Jean are true-to-life characters that we’d like to spend more time with. Looking forward to Book #7!
