“Making Reeds Start to Finish” is a series focused on the specialized craft of reed making which has traditionally been passed down from teacher to student in the context of a private lesson.
Optimized for the iPad and any Mac (Running OS 10.9 or later), the series offers reed making students from all around, a glimpse into the processes, techniques and tools used by the masters of this craft.
We aim to solve some age-old problems like, ‘What do I do when the teacher is not there?’ or ‘How did my teacher say to scrape this part?’ and ‘I really would like to see my teacher do that again and I would watch up close.’
We are privileged to have Dr. Nancy Ambrose King as our first author on the subject of oboe reed making.
Dr. King is a celebrated recording artist and international soloist. As a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of music, Dr. King is a highly sought-after clinician and a former president of the International Double Reed Society.
Dr. King will instruct from “Start to Finish” her entire process of making reeds including some invaluable insight about what tools she uses and recommends and she even provides a list of the major vendors in the United States from which you can buy these essential tools.
Inside, you will see numerous hi-resolution photos, of products and techniques she advocates including six galleries that are instructional and informative.
Additionally, there are over 15 videos you can watch repeatedly and on demand to learn and to fine tune your reed making skills, multiple interactive images which allow you to dive deep into her processes, hand-drawn diagrams and a 3D interactive oboe reed which will allow you to spin around a computer generated version of her reed full screen to inspect details.
She offers great insight into the troubleshooting and fixing of many common reed making problems.
Please enjoy the book and expect more to come out in the future from other Master performers and reed makers!

Really wish I could get this in print or in some other form. Being a poor college student, I can't afford and iPad, but I would love to be able to read this.
Dr. King's book is great! If you follow her instructions closely, your very first completed reed will be playable. I was amazed. The videos are clear and her instructions are detailed. If you are a beginning reed maker, Dr. King's book is a very good guide.
Why is it only for iPad?
I really wish I could get this on my MacBook so I can have it while at school. I also don't own an iPad and I'm a freshman in college who is just starting to make reeds. The people who made this app really need to get on this and make it for all Apple mobile devices as well as laptops / desktops. I'm pretty disappointed. :(
