Wonderful!
Just as good this year as it was when it came out, bunchteen years ago.
We lost Kagan too soon
This collection of short stories about the colony planet of Mirable, and the trials of genetic engineering redundancy /and/ an alien ecology, is an excellent exploration of a frontier world where not everything has been lost -- but the computer files have holes.
This being Baen, there are some typos: most notably a frequent "lead" instead of "led" (with that pronunciation, the first is a metal, not the past tense of the identically-spelled "lead" (pronounced "Leed"). While English is a terrible, terrible language, I do wish that the copy-editors would catch such issues and not rely on spellcheckers. There are also occasional missing words.
That said, it's a good book. It's /Kagan/! She writes happy, clever people, and if her kids are perhaps precocious and well-behaved, they're still a part of a an optimistic universe.
