My Mother's Diary

Gary always suspected his father's disappearance had its roots in the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor. However, his mother, Marie, had invariably remained reticent about the pertinent events that preceded the strike.

When Marie's diary informing those fateful days in December 1941 surfaces, Gary believes it may hold the answer to the mystery that has gnawed at him for decades. As mother and son probe the journal, her flagging acuity rebounds.

Gary learns that his father played a critical role in Navy signals intelligence in Hawaii. Marie, a former government cryptographer, discovers that the islands are rife with Japanese espionage. Although the couple increasingly sound alarms, they are disparaged. They suspicion that Washington realizes the impending danger, but will not act. With the attack exploding around them, they manage to blunt its potency. Nevertheless, what they knew and did will cost them dearly.
